“For Mai Tai historic purposes this is an extremely interesting rum. It tastes and looks like an exact description of how Trader Vic and Don would describe the “Martinique rums” of old that they would use. That meant rhum traditionnel, coffe colored (american weak diner coffee, not black italian espresso), with a distinct burnt note that is less pronounced and quicker to dissipate than demeraras. As nerds know, Negrita and St James are the only surviving martinique marques from that era and both their formulations are vastly different today from what it was back then (old negrita did not have high esther grand arome elements for example and st james went all out on agricole for consumer products). Even though this is from La Reunion it may just be a rum that has kept the style alive?”
